The Young Violinist
François Martin-Kavel captures a young street musician clutching her violin with a gaze that is both innocent and surprisingly direct. Her green dress is noticeably tattered at the shoulder, hinting at a hard life, yet the rich, warm lighting and her vibrant red headscarf make her look almost regal. This style of 'romanticized poverty' was a favorite trick of 19th-century Academic artists, who loved painting beautiful, sad children to tug at the heartstrings (and wallets) of wealthy collectors.
