Game Market by Frans Snyders, 1630s

Frans Snyders was the absolute master of the 'abundance' still life, and this chaotic game market is a perfect example of his Baroque flair. The table is overflowing with the spoils of the hunt: a majestic white swan draped dramatically over the edge, peacocks showing off their iridescent feathers even in death, and a skinned carcass hanging ominously on the left. On the far right, a sturdy hunter proudly displays a boar's head, adding a human element to this feast of fur and feathers. Snyders was actually a close collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens, often painting the animals and still life elements in Rubens' larger compositions, which explains the incredible energy and lifelike texture of the fur and plumage here.
