Paul Taglioni
1850
Meet Paul Taglioni, a man whose spectacular 'mutton chop' sideburns are almost as memorable as his dance career. This 1850 lithograph captures the choreographer looking dashing in a high-collared coat and cravat, exuding the confidence of a man who directed the Berlin State Ballet for decades. While his sister Marie is the one who famously popularized dancing on tiptoes (pointe work), Paul was the organizational genius keeping the show running behind the scenes. The artist, Franz Krüger, was actually nicknamed 'Horse Krüger' for his military paintings, making this elegant civilian portrait a delightful departure from his usual galloping subjects.
