Three Vignettes for Book Illustration by Franz von Bayros

Franz von Bayros, often called the 'Marquis de Bayros,' was a master of the erotic and the whimsical, famous for pushing the boundaries of early 20th-century censorship with his Art Nouveau illustrations. This sheet features three playful vignettes connected by long, diagonal poles that cut across the composition like theatrical props or tightrope balances. At the top, a woman in a dark bodice and ruffled skirt seems to float, while below, a smug-looking gentleman in a tricorn hat lounges on an ornate cart. To the right, a satyr-like figure sits within a large oval frame. Bayros blended Rococo fashion with decorative lines, creating a style that was as elegant as it was naughty.
