Old Hunter with Rifle
Franz von Defregger brings the rugged spirit of the Austrian Alps to life in this striking portrait of an old hunter. Clutching a weathered walking stick and carrying a long rifle slung over his shoulder, the bearded figure stares out with a piercing, knowing gaze that speaks of decades spent navigating mountain trails. As a master of 19th-century realism and Tyrolean genre painting, Defregger was famous for romanticizing the hardy, traditional lifestyle of Alpine peasants and hunters. This piece perfectly captures that beloved archetype—the wise, weathered mountain man who has become a symbol of Austrian cultural heritage.
