The Vacationer (Oil Sketch)
1880
Franz von Defregger invites us into a cozy, dimly lit Alpine room where a soldier on leave has returned to share stories with his family. The central figure, pipe in hand, holds court while women and children in traditional Tyrolean dress listen intently, their faces glowing in the warm light. This oil sketch captures the warmth of rural life with loose, expressive brushstrokes that make the scene feel alive and spontaneous. Defregger was a master of these genre scenes, romanticizing the simple, honest life of the Tyrolean peasantry for 19th-century audiences.
