Antique Couple
1879
Before Gustav Klimt became famous for his golden kisses, he and his collaborator Franz von Matsch were busy mastering historical scenes like this one. Titled 'Antikes Paar' (Ancient Couple), this 1879 watercolor shows a woman in classical drapery reaching for a flower while her bearded companion gazes at her with quiet admiration. The loose, sketchy style suggests this was a preparatory study for a larger decorative project, perhaps for one of Vienna's grand theaters. It captures the academic elegance of the late 19th century just before the wild, swirling styles of Art Nouveau and the Vienna Secession took over the art world.
