A young Bedouin
Signed and dated 'Cairo 1903' in the bottom corner, this portrait by Austrian artist Franz Xaver Kosler captures a young Bedouin man with an intense, calm gaze. Notice how the white robe is painted with loose, sweeping strokes that suggest movement and softness, contrasting sharply with the smooth, detailed rendering of his face. This is a prime example of Orientalism, a 19th-century trend where Western artists flocked to the Middle East to paint local subjects. Kosler died young in 1905, so this dignified portrait is one of the final masterpieces of his short career.
