Perished Stags
Two massive stags lie lifeless on a lush green forest floor in this striking piece by Austrian painter Franz Xaver von Pausinger. Their heavy, branching antlers rest against one another, creating a somber yet beautifully rendered scene of nature's cycle. Embracing the realist movement, the artist captures the coarse texture of their fur and the quiet stillness of the woodland setting without romanticizing the harsh reality of death. It's a raw, unflinching look at the forest that feels almost like a paused moment from a hunting expedition.
