Venus and Cupid

Venus and Cupid by Frederic Leighton, ca. 184

Frederic Leighton, a heavyweight of the Victorian Academic art world, presents a goddess who seems to have brought her own curtains—her hair is so impossibly long it loops around her body like a golden scarf. It’s a clever compositional trick: since Venus is nude, the hair acts as a modest drapery, framing her pale skin against the dark, lush orange grove behind her. At her feet, a chubby Cupid fusses over her ankle, grounding the divine figure in a sweet, playful moment. Leighton was so respected he became the first British artist to be raised to the peerage as Lord Leighton, though he tragically died just one day after receiving the title!
