The Scouts by Frederic Remington, 1908

Frederic Remington was the ultimate chronicler of the American West, though ironically he was an Easterner who traveled the frontier specifically to sketch its inhabitants. In this 1908 piece, two Native American scouts sit atop their horses, scanning the horizon against a backdrop of rolling, dusty hills. One figure has a hand raised to his face—perhaps shielding his eyes from the glare or taking a contemplative pause—adding a sense of quiet tension to the ride. Remington created these images to preserve a 'vanishing' world, effectively inventing the visual language of the Wild West that we still recognize in movies today.
