On Merced River Cala
Frederick Ferdinand Schafer captures a quiet, overcast day along the Merced River, where a flock of white geese gathers peacefully on the water's edge. The lush, dark trees on the left bank contrast beautifully with the pale, misty sky, creating a sense of calm isolation in the American wilderness. Schafer, a German-born painter who spent much of his career in California, was known for these serene, realistic landscapes that often featured wildlife and tranquil river scenes. His work offers a glimpse into the untouched beauty of 19th-century California before rapid development changed the landscape forever.
