The Dutchman
c. 1904
Frederick Gottwald captures the rugged soul of a Dutch fisherman in this striking portrait from around 1904. The weathered man sits on the edge of a boat, sporting traditional wooden clogs and a heavy coat that speaks to a life of hard labor on the water. His intense, direct gaze and the loose, expressive brushstrokes give the scene a lively, almost tactile quality. Reflecting themes that would later define Regionalism, it’s a wonderful snapshot of working-class life, showing how the artist found dignity in the everyday struggles of common people.
