The American Star (George Washington)
ca. 1803
Step right up to this patriotic stage set! Frederick Kemmelmeyer, a German-born artist working in early America, created this vibrant tribute to George Washington that looks like a theatrical backdrop complete with blue curtains. Washington stands front and center in his blue uniform, framed by a laurel wreath and a giant gold star. Interestingly, the pedestal below him bears a variation of Henry Lee's famous eulogy; instead of 'first in the hearts of his countrymen,' it reads 'First in War, First in Peace, First in defence of our Country.' Surrounded by eagles, flags, and drums, this piece is a classic example of American Federal folk art designed to stir up national pride shortly after the Revolution.
