Fairy and Bear in Garden
1911
Frederick Stuart Church captures a delightful moment of mischief in this 1911 piece, where a tiny winged fairy teases a small black bear cub with a flower. They are nestled inside a circular clearing, dramatically framed by towering green grass and vibrant, torch-like red hot poker flowers. The contrast between the dark, lush foliage and the bright orange blooms creates a magical, almost hidden world for these two unlikely playmates. Church was famous for his incredibly detailed animal illustrations, often giving them human-like personalities.
