From Hamburg
1916
Friedrich Kallmorgen painted this moody scene of Hamburg in 1916, right in the middle of World War I, yet there are no soldiers in sight—just hardworking locals. The sky is absolutely massive, a swirling drama of grey and white clouds that looks like it’s about to burst, dominating the old brick warehouses below. In the muddy foreground, horse-drawn carts and laborers trudge through what looks like a construction site, grounding the lofty sky in gritty reality. It’s a great example of how Impressionist techniques were used to capture the industrial, working-class soul of a German city.
