Odyssey Cycle 6
1864
Friedrich Preller the Elder brings Homer's epic to life in this scene from his famous 'Odyssey Cycle,' created in 1864. Here, we see the shipwrecked Odysseus, draped in tattered cloth, gesturing toward the princess Nausicaa on the shores of Scheria. The lush, dramatic trees and moody, cloud-filled sky are classic hallmarks of Romanticism, emphasizing nature's wild beauty over human control. Preller originally designed these scenes as frescoes for the Goethe Museum in Weimar, capturing the 19th-century German fascination with classical antiquity and the heroic journey home.
