Odyssey Cycle 7
1864
Friedrich Preller the Elder transports us straight into Homer's Odyssey with this dramatic, rocky shoreline scene. Weary crew members haul heavy jars and collapse in exhaustion in the foreground, while a mysterious statue-like figure watches from a boat in the distance. The towering cliffs and windswept trees are pure Romanticism, emphasizing how tiny humans are against the wild, sublime power of nature. Preller actually painted a whole cycle of 16 scenes like this for a Grand Duke, basically creating a cinematic storyboard centuries before movies were invented!
