Venice by Frits Thaulow, circa 1899

Norwegian painter Frits Thaulow captures a moody, overcast day in Venice, far from the usual sunny postcards. The water shimmers with reflections of the weathered, peeling buildings, painted in loose, impressionistic strokes that make the surface look like it's actually rippling. Thaulow was obsessed with painting water and wet surfaces, often traveling to find the perfect damp atmosphere. He was good friends with Claude Monet, and you can see that French influence here in how he prioritizes light and atmosphere over strict detail. The dark boat moored in the foreground adds a sense of quiet stillness to the scene.
