Trento by Fritz Bamberger, 1853

Fritz Bamberger took us on a virtual hike to the Italian Alps with this breezy 1853 watercolor sketch of Trento. Working in the Romantic style, he wasn't interested in a perfect map, but rather the moody atmosphere of the mountains. Notice how the distant peaks fade into a misty blue-grey, creating a sense of infinite depth, while the foreground is all sharp rocks and golden sunlight. It feels like a quick snapshot from a 19th-century hiking trip, signed right there in the corner by the artist himself.
