Pig trade
1896
Step into a bustling 19th-century German farmyard where serious business is being conducted over a very important pig. Three men in wide-brimmed hats are huddled in deep negotiation, likely haggling over the price of the stout animal, while a curious toddler reaches out and a rooster struts by in the foreground. Fritz Boehle, a champion of the rural 'Heimatkunst' (Homeland Art) movement, uses energetic, scratchy lines to capture the rustic texture of the thatched roof and celebrate the honest, earthy life of the countryside before industrialization took over.
