Untitled (Summit Motif)
1927
Fritz Stuckenberg’s 1927 piece bursts with the raw, emotional energy typical of German Expressionism, trading realistic landscapes for a dreamlike vision of nature. A blazing yellow sun hovers over three striking red mountain peaks, which seem to glow from within against a row of cool blue, tree-like shapes. Tiny, dark structures sit quietly in the brown foreground, looking almost dwarfed by the vibrant, almost supernatural forces of the sky and mountains above. It’s a perfect example of how Expressionists used bold color to capture the feeling of a place rather than just its physical appearance.
