Bijutsukai Pl.183 by Furuya Kōrin, 1901

Imagine spring in Japan: two swallows are playing tag through a waterfall of green wisteria vines. The top bird is a vibrant, electric blue, while its partner below is sleek black and white, both captured in mid-flight with open beaks as if chirping. Furuya Kōrin created this for *Bijutsukai* (The Art World) magazine in 1901, reviving the classic Rinpa style which loves bold, flat colors and nature. It’s a perfect snapshot of the Meiji era trying to hold onto its artistic roots while the world modernized around it.
