Gaspar de Crayer was so successful in Brussels that he was often compared to Rubens, painting massive altarpieces to inspire awe. Here, he captures the chaotic, heartbreaking moment Jesus is lowered from the cross in pure Baroque fashion. Bodies tangle in a diagonal cascade, faces twist in grief, and dramatic lighting highlights the pale, lifeless form of Christ. Notice the skull at the bottom right—it's a grim reminder that this is Golgotha, the 'Place of the Skull.' The woman in the shimmering gold dress, likely Mary Magdalene, tenderly holds Christ's feet, adding a touch of intimate sorrow to the scene.
