Boatmen on the Missouri

Boatmen on the Missouri by George Caleb Bingham

Three rugged river men float down the Missouri, seemingly unaware of the puffing steamboat in the distance that is about to make their flatboat obsolete. Bingham captures the quiet, glowing atmosphere of the American frontier in this classic example of Luminism, where the vast, cloud-filled sky dwarfs the human figures. The barefoot man in the top hat and the cool, crossed-armed boatman give us a glimpse into a vanishing way of life just as the Industrial Revolution was chugging up the river.
