Pa-Rís-Ka-Róo-Pa, Two Crows, a Band Chief
1832
George Catlin traveled deep into the American frontier in the 1830s with a mission to document Native American cultures before they vanished. Here he portrays Two Crows, a band chief, standing tall in his ceremonial regalia, complete with a crow perched dramatically on his head and a spear adorned with fur and feathers. The chief's intense gaze and the detailed beadwork on his fringed buckskin shirt capture a moment of dignity and power. Catlin painted over 500 portraits like this one, creating an invaluable historical record of the Plains Indians.
