Pietà
1925
George Minne, a Belgian artist often associated with the symbolic intensity of the Art Nouveau era, created this haunting 1925 drawing of the Pietà. He strips away the usual Renaissance elegance, merging the Virgin Mary and Christ into a single, dark mass of sorrow where Mary’s face is buried in shadow. Minne was primarily a sculptor, and you can see that influence here—he treats the paper like clay, using thick, grainy strokes to build a heavy, physical sense of grief. It feels less like a religious icon and more like a raw, private moment of mourning.
