Mrs. Thomas Phipps

Mrs. Thomas Phipps by George Romney

George Romney captures Mrs. Thomas Phipps looking like the height of 18th-century fashion, dominated by that absolutely enormous, lace-trimmed bonnet that frames her face like a fluffy cloud. While Romney is most famous for his obsessive, endless portraits of his muse Emma Hamilton (he painted her over 60 times!), here he turns his attention to a more traditional subject. He renders the delicate ribbons and sheer fabrics of her dress with incredible skill, making the dark background push her pale complexion and intricate white lace forward. It’s a masterclass in texture, proving that even without a famous muse, Romney could make a respectable lady look like a star.
