In the Park
1916
George Bellows captures the chaotic energy of a crowded urban park in this striking 1916 print. Light-clad women and children cluster in the foreground, their bright dresses popping against the heavy, dark shadows of the surrounding trees and looming city buildings. It’s a classic slice of Ashcan School realism, showing everyday New Yorkers enjoying a day out without any of the usual glamour. Bellows created this during his first year of experimenting with lithography, a medium that perfectly suited his bold, dramatic use of light and shadow.
