Still Life with a Violin
1912
Georges Braque was basically the original master of 'fake it till you make it'—but in a high-art way! In 1912, he bought rolls of faux wood-grain wallpaper from a shop and cut them up to create this piece. By pasting these textured brown papers onto the sheet and sketching over them with charcoal, he helped invent a technique called papier collé (pasted paper). It looks like a violin has been exploded and reassembled, blending real-world textures with abstract shapes to trick your eye into seeing a 3D object on a flat surface.
