Cobbler at Work
ca. 1879-80
Before he became famous for his meticulous dots of color, Georges Seurat was mastering the humble pencil. In this sketch from around 1879, we see a cobbler hunched over his craft, captured in quiet, focused concentration. The loose, searching lines show the artist figuring out the posture and weight of the figure, a far cry from the rigid scientific precision he'd later apply to his Pointillist masterpieces. It's a fascinating glimpse into the early training of a genius who would eventually revolutionize how we see light and color.
