Gray Weather, Grande Jatte
ca. 1886-88
Georges Seurat was basically the scientist of the art world, obsessed with how our eyes mix colors. Instead of blending paints on a palette, he covered this canvas with thousands of tiny, distinct dots—a technique called Pointillism. While his famous 'Sunday Afternoon' painting shows this same island (La Grande Jatte) packed with fashionable Parisians, this version captures a much quieter, misty moment on the Seine. Notice the colorful, dotted border framing the scene; Seurat painted this to transition the viewer from the real world into the optical illusion of the painting.
