View of the Seine
1882-83
Before he became the king of dots, Georges Seurat was experimenting with short, choppy brushstrokes to capture the shimmering light of the river Seine. Painted around 1882, this scene shows two figures in a small boat navigating the calm waters near a bridge. You can already see his obsession with light and reflection, setting the stage for the famous pointillism he would invent just a few years later.
