Young Woman Powdering Herself by Georges Seurat, 1889

Georges Seurat created this intimate portrait of his mistress, Madeleine Knobloch, using his signature pointillist technique—thousands of tiny dots of pure color that blend in the viewer's eye. Notice the decorative border he added later, possibly to frame the scene like a tapestry. Despite the glamorous subject, X-rays reveal Seurat originally painted a mirror on the table, which he later covered up with a vase of flowers, perhaps to keep the focus entirely on her. It's a fascinating glimpse into the artist's private life and meticulous process.
