Archangel Gabriel; The Virgin Annunciate
ca. 1510
Gerard David’s diptych captures the dramatic moment of the Annunciation with striking, almost sculptural intensity. On the left, the Archangel Gabriel gestures dramatically from a dark, arched niche, his heavy robes cascading in crisp, metallic folds that look more like carved stone than fabric. Across the divide, the Virgin Mary stands in quiet contemplation, her hands raised in surprise as the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a white dove. Created around 1510 during the Early Netherlandish period, this piece is famous for its moody, shadowy backgrounds that make the pale, luminous figures pop out like statues in a cathedral.
