Moroccan couple
1933
Gerda Wegener, famous for her glamorous illustrations and as the wife of Lili Elbe (the subject of the film 'The Danish Girl'), created this delicate scene during a trip to Morocco in 1933. The soft watercolor washes and visible pencil lines capture a quiet, intimate moment between a man and a woman in traditional North African attire, surrounded by lush greenery. It's a beautiful example of her later work, showing how her elegant Art Nouveau style adapted to new cultural landscapes after she left Paris.
