Portrait of John Vaughan
1793-1797
Gilbert Stuart, the artist famous for painting the face on the US one-dollar bill, captures John Vaughan in peak 1790s fashion. Notice the powdered hair tied back with a black ribbon and that voluminous white cravat—it screams 'wealthy merchant.' Stuart uses a dark, dramatic oval background to make Vaughan’s face pop, a technique common in Neoclassical portraiture to emphasize dignity and character. Vaughan looks calm and intelligent, a perfect snapshot of the American elite just after the Revolution who helped found the Library Company of Philadelphia.
