Three Philosophers
Giorgione’s mysterious masterpiece leaves us guessing to this day. Seated on a rock, a young man calculates with a compass while staring into a dark, shadowy cave, flanked by an older scholar in a turban and a bearded sage holding a geometric diagram. Painted during the Venetian Renaissance, this enigmatic scene has sparked centuries of debate—are they representing different ages of man, or perhaps ancient Greek, Islamic, and Christian philosophies? Giorgione died before finishing it, leaving his friend Sebastiano del Piombo to complete the final touches, and today it hangs in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum, still guarding its secrets.
