The Wicked Mothers
1894
In this chilling Symbolist masterpiece, a desolate, snow-covered wasteland stretches toward jagged mountains under a pale sky. A gnarled, leafless tree twists violently into the air, and clinging to its branches is a woman with wild hair, seemingly trapped or merging with the dark wood. This scene depicts a dark legend about 'wicked mothers' who refused to nurse their children, condemned to wander the frozen Alps as twisted trees. Segantini used a technique called Divisionism—applying tiny, distinct strokes of pure color—to make the snow shimmer and give the landscape an eerie, dreamlike texture.
