松樹 by Giovanni Segantini, c. 1897

Giovanni Segantini was absolutely obsessed with the Swiss Alps, and this piece captures that rugged mountain energy through the lens of Symbolism. He used a technique called Divisionism—think of it as the Italian cousin to Pointillism—where thousands of tiny, distinct strokes of color vibrate against each other to create that shimmering water and rough tree bark. The vibrant red rhododendrons bursting around the gnarled pine trunk suggest a high-altitude meadow, likely near his home in the Engadin valley. Tragically, Segantini died young from altitude sickness while painting in the mountains, making these lush, textured landscapes his final, passionate love letters to nature.
