The Favourite

The Favourite by Giulio Rosati

Giulio Rosati invites us into a lavish, tile-covered fantasy of harem life, a genre known as Orientalism that captivated 19th-century Europe. In the center, a nude woman—presumably the 'favourite'—casually combs her hair while a wealthy man reclines on a divan, watching her with intense focus. Meanwhile, another woman sits dejectedly on the floor, perhaps realizing she's been replaced, while a guarded figure lurks in the doorway. Rosati, an Italian painter, created these exotic, hyper-detailed scenes to cater to a European audience hungry for tales of mystery and luxury in the 'East', often painting them entirely from his studio in Rome without ever visiting the locations he depicted.
