Two Seated Figures with Books
mid-18th century
Italian artist Giuseppe Bernardino Bison captures a quiet moment of study with these two loosely sketched figures, rendered in warm, earthy tones. He uses quick, energetic pen strokes and fluid brown washes to suggest the heavy drapery and the deep concentration of the readers, leaving much to the viewer's imagination. This kind of spontaneous drawing was a common practice for artists working out compositions or capturing fleeting poses before committing to a grand final painting. It is a wonderful reminder that sometimes the roughest sketches hold the most life and energy.
