Football is a brutal game!
1913
Step back to 1913 with this cover from *Puck*, a famous American humor magazine known for its satirical cartoons. Artist Gordon Grant captures a witty scene at a Harvard football game, hinted at by the 'H' pennant in the background. While the title declares 'Football is a brutal game!', the woman in the center seems ready for a high-society event rather than a muddy gridiron, sporting a vibrant orange coat and a luxurious white fur stole. She hands a cup to a tall, looming figure, while men in flat caps and bowler hats huddle on the steps around them, looking exhausted or freezing. It’s a charming contrast between Edwardian fashion and the rough-and-tumble reality of early college sports.
