The Holy Family
1620s
Guercino was known as a speed demon of the Baroque era, and this sketch proves it. He skips the stiff, holy poses usually seen in religious art, giving us a candid family snapshot instead: a chubby baby Jesus stands confidently reaching for his mom, while Mary looks away dreamily and Joseph peers over her shoulder. The loose, energetic strokes make the heavy robes feel like they're moving, showing us the artist's brilliant, rapid-fire thought process as he worked out the composition for a larger piece.
