Salmon Fishing
1892
Gunnar Berndtson captures the raw energy of nature and hard labor in this 1892 masterpiece of Finnish Realism. Two fishermen battle the rushing rapids of a river, their wooden dock barely containing the chaos of the white water crashing behind them. One man stands tall managing a heavy net, while his partner bends over the catch, with a massive, freshly landed salmon resting right at our feet. The artist's loose, energetic brushstrokes make the water look like it's actually moving, bringing the fresh smell of the river right into the gallery.
