View of Ariccia
1841
Swedish artist Gustaf Wilhelm Palm painted this scene of Ariccia in 1841 while soaking up the Italian sun during his Grand Tour. The composition is a classic Romantic trick: place the viewer on a rugged, rocky path in the foreground to make the sunlit town and its grand dome in the distance feel like a magical destination. You can almost feel the heat of the Roman afternoon radiating off those ochre buildings.
