Part of the Campagna Romana
1847
Imagine standing in the Roman countryside in 1847—that's exactly where Gustav Kaupert was when he created this delicate sketch. The scene is full of crumbling ruins and bare trees, capturing the romantic decay that was all the rage for artists on the Grand Tour. You can even see his handwritten note in the bottom right corner dating it to March 19th in Rome ('Roma d 19/3 47'). The brown spots scattered across the sky aren't stars, but 'foxing,' a type of age-related staining on the paper that proves this piece has been traveling through history for over 170 years.
