Hummingbirds by Gustav Mützel, 1897

Gustav Mützel’s vibrant 1897 illustration brings the dazzling world of hummingbirds to life, showcasing nine distinct species darting among tropical blooms. Created for the 14th edition of the famous Brockhaus encyclopedia, this plate (titled 'Kolibris') was designed to educate German readers about the exotic birds of the Americas. Notice the incredible variety in beak shapes, from the sword-like bill of the Sword-billed Hummingbird at the bottom to the curved beak of the Hermit hummingbird at the top left, perfectly adapted for sipping nectar from specific flowers. It's a beautiful snapshot of 19th-century scientific illustration.
