Noite de inverno
1893
Gustav Wentzel practically lived for painting the freezing Norwegian outdoors, and you can feel the chill radiating from this scene. He used thick, choppy brushstrokes to pile on the white and blue paint, making the snow look heavy and crunchy under the pale, yellowish glow of a winter sunset. A few brave little birds huddle on the bare branches, the only signs of life in a landscape dominated by frost. It’s a masterclass in Norwegian realism, proving that a quiet, snowy thicket can be just as captivating as a grand historical event.
