The Clearing
1866
Gustave Courbet invites you for a walk through a dense, sun-dappled forest in this 1866 landscape. Notice how the path winds invitingly between mossy rocks and towering trees, leading your eye toward a bright clearing in the distance. As the father of Realism, Courbet rejected the polished, fake-looking landscapes of his time, preferring to paint the rugged, messy beauty of nature exactly as he saw it. You can even see his signature '66 G. Courbet' in the bottom left, marking a time when he was at the height of his powers, capturing the wild spirit of the French woods.
